VOB files with subtitles

I don't think this is illegal but if it is then I am sorry and pelase take down the thread but I am backing up some DVDs that I currently own into VOB onto my hard drive. The problem is when I play the VOB file in WMP there is no subtitle even though I told dvd decrypter to add it. Is there something I am missing here?

Re: VOB files with subtitles

Subtitles have to be ripped separately. Depending on what you are using to rip the Vobs (I used Gordian Knot when I was backing up DVD's), there should be an option to pull the subtitle files. WMP supports .srt files for subtitles. They need to be named the same as the movie files and in the same directory.

I'm using Wondershare DVD ripper and I see an option for subtitles but it appears not to do anything. So there is a seperate file for subtitles hmmmm

Re: VOB files with subtitles

I back mine up to ISO and then mount them as a virtual drive. Plays just like a physical disc.

Re: VOB files with subtitles

I'm pretty sure vob files are like an avi, mkv, etc in that they're a container format. The video, audio and subtitle streams are stored within the vob container.

WMP does have options for subtitles if you right click on the video while playing. You can choose your language, etc. I've never actually seen that work with an avi or mkv file but it just might work with a vob since it's supported natively like a DVD (basically the same thing).

If it won't work then you may need to install a codec/utility like VobSub. I've had trouble getting VobSub to work consistently though, at least pre-Win7 (I now use Shark's codec pack in Win7 and VobSub works much more reliably in that). Ffdshow also supports subtitles if you enable them in the options but you'd have to make sure that ffdshow is set to decode the DVD format first.

Oops, you're right doly. I'm thinking of ripping DVD's to Divx, where you have to rip the subs seperately. Vob's have the subs embedded in them.

I'm also using Shark 007 codec and I can not get the English subtitles to show up when I am playing VOB files in Windows Media Player. How is MKV as a file format? I'm converting all my anime to MKV with the subtitle on all the time and it's not too bad. Any thoughts?

I take that back, the MKV files are horrible there is some issue with it as the quality looks horrible. There are like lines and the motions are not "fluid" when there are action feelings. Is there an alternative for this? AVI?

Re: VOB files with subtitles

MKV is just another container file. They usually are used to hold H264 high def video and an AC3 or DTS audio stream (and occassionally a subtitle file too). The quality will depend on the software encoder used to create the stream and I have no idea what you're using. For the most part, the MKVs I have all look pretty good. I have a few crappier ones but a low bitrate encode will look bad no matter what codec you're using. My biggest gripe with MKV is that I have yet to find a way of adding tags to the files that actually works - I have to manually classify them all in the library.

I'm not sure why VobSub isn't working for you in Shark's. I've never tried vob files with it but I have several systems playing mkvs with subs just fine using Win7 and Shark's atm. I have found that Win7 is an extreme pain in the ass with codecs though and if something goes wrong it's a big problem. My main gaming/personal PC cannot play back my MKVs right now as something has gone horribly wrong there. I had it working but then ran into a problem and had to change something and now nothing I do seems to make it work again I've pretty much given up on it until I do a Windows re-install.

BTW, I rename all my MKVs to .avi extensions so WMP will pick them up in the library (works just fine). MKVs also work with external sub files (.sub or .srt) just placed in the same folder with the same filename.

Re: VOB files with subtitles

Poor looking MKVs might also depend on which codec is actually processing the video stream inside it too. There is one DivX version that's recommended in conjunctions with Shark's in a setup guide I follow but I have found little to no difference between ffdshow, MS's codec and the built in DivX codec in Shark's. They all look fine to me so I tend to stick with the simple Microsoft decoder.

I'm using the stock codec with Shark and I'm using WOndershare DVD Ripper. What I find interesting is that it appears at random times. There would be frames where everything is clear then the next one the face becomes a bit blurry or there are like "lines" which make it not look clear or solid. What do I use for Frame Rate when converting to MKV?

Re: VOB files with subtitles

The standard framerate for anything coming off of a DVD or Bluray (movies) is 24 fps.

Hmm maybe that's why there is some minor issue with quality, the program was set to 29.97 fps.

Re: VOB files with subtitles

Don't know anything about re-encoding, but dolynick is right, just about any "movie" is going to have a native framerate of 24fps.

29.97fps is for NTSC (television, unless you're in a country that uses PAL), so you would probably choose that if your DVDs are of television shows.

If you want to really dig into how these numbers work, are converted to one another (and to 60hz displays like 720p or 1080p) look up "telecine" or "2:3 pulldown".

I just want my anime without any disturance in quality! Well my ripping of anime is currently on hold. I"m trying to finish up the movies and tv shows to see how much is left on my 2TB.
