OS / SSD question.

I just got a (nother) new SSD. I currently have an Agility 3 that I'll be putting in my laptop. I was thinking, since I'm upgrading to a Vertex 3 (Agility 3 and the Vertex 3 are 120gb's), I'd just use clonezilla for the home comp and be done with it. The laptop doesn't currently have an SSD, so I'm guessing I'll have to reinstall the OS, correct?

Re: OS / SSD question.

If you want to put the OS on the SSD, yes.

Re: OS / SSD question.

Correct, thought I just remember i'm getting another motherboard too. So I'll probably have to reinstall anyway.

EVGA 790i ---> EVGA Z68 (got a great deal on it in my opinion). Anyone know the chances of the cloned OS working fine? hahaha.

Re: OS / SSD question.

Really depends on the bios of the motherboards. Based on my experience I have had about 50/50 chance. Try it and see, worst case scenario you are doing a reformat.

It's not worth the trouble and potential problems that you might not see right away but may occur later on.

Yeah, your probably right. The thing that sucks the most is I JUST reformated less than a month ago :smileysad:. There goes another W7 activation.

W7 activations are dependent on hardware changes. If you were using the exact same hardware and merely reformatted then an activation wouldn't be consumed. If large chunks of your computer have been changed, then it calculates the percentage of change. I believe a motherboard change skirts constituting a reactivation, but if you coupled the motherboard change with another component, then an activation will be consumed. At least that's how I remember it. And I don't know if that applies to all W7 types.

Re: OS / SSD question.

The only thing that would use up an activation is if you changed the motherboard. That is the only component W7 measures to confirm if it is going into another computer is the bios on the motherboard. Which is why I said you have a 50/50 chance of having to reformat.

Re: OS / SSD question.

Yeah, I'm getting a Z68 mobo and Vertex 3 to replace my 790 SLI and Agility 3. So I'm pretty sure I'll have to reactivate either way. Oh well, I won't be reinstalling anytime in the near future, so it's all good.

Re: OS / SSD question.

If I remember right, each type of core hardware device is assigned a weight value in terms of relevancy concerning a "new computer" and Windows Activation. GPU, CPU, RAM, NIC, etc, etc... Of all of them, and as odd as it sounds, I seem to recall the NIC having the largest "weight" in terms of hardware changes.

The motherboard itself doesn't register as a device in windows. It does have several onboard components that do though, including the NIC if you're using integrated networking. That's why changing the motherboard usually means having to use a "new" activation. In theory, if a new motherboard had most of the same onboard components as the old it might not require re-activation but Windows might be looking at unique serial numbers (not sure) and not just hardware device IDs too.

Thats some good info! I think I'll just wing it and clone the hard drive. I don't have that much data on it so if all else fails, I've only wasted the hour or so it'll take to clone all my data.

Re: OS / SSD question.

Just an update. Cloning the HD didn't work, but the clone itself was going at 9.25GB/min. Kinda sucked, but I'm more or less all back up and running. I got "screwed" over with some stupid mistakes and inconviences, but nothing serious.

1st. I put in the rear IO panel upsidedown and didn't realize it till I went to plug everything in. I somehow ALWAYS manage to screw a minor thing up that requires me to disassemble everything. It also only happens when I'm working on my own comp...

2nd. the Z68 board I have doesn't have the PS/2 keyboard port. My favorite keyboard (I've used it for 10+ years) needs that for the keyboard. I had to steal my dads mac keyboard because it's the only USB keyboard we had in the house.

3rd. Can't use my old X-FI sound card. New mobo doesn't have any PCI slots. Sucks because I like having my game sound seperate from my voice coms.

Overall, none of that was a big deal. Just anoying. If I would have LOOKED at everything before hand I would have known. I'm happy with the performance of the Z68+2500K+Vertex 3. The little windows "flag" at the begining doesn't even fully form before I'm logging in and at my desktop. I was also able to bump up all my graphics in EVE to full without seeing any performance hits, so far anyway.

Ive found that since i installed an ssd it takes longer to post than it does to boot up.Looks like i just moved the bottleneck to somewhere else lol.

Some people are like slinkies, utterly useless but great fun to push down two flights of stairs.

Re: OS / SSD question.

Yup. I noticed that too. It doesn't bother me much though, it's still A LOT faster than a mechanical HD.
