Computer boots to System Recovery only, and System Restore failsOptions
07-05-2011 10:22 AM It's Windows 7 Home Premium, and I have no idea what happened. It sounds like a virus, but if I don't have to format I'm not going to.

07-05-2011 01:15 PM Run Memtest86 on the affected machine overnight. Pop out the hard drive and use another computer to do a scan for errors and also a virus scan. Re: Computer boots to System Recovery only, and System Restore failsOptions
07-11-2011 08:46 PM So, did you just re-install your OS?

The computer's just been sitting there, off. I hate people who don't know jack about computers sometimes. I don't even know how you would **bleep** up a computer this badly in a few minutes.

08-08-2011 10:25 PM CPU (or processor) can not catch a virus. Is your operating system (Windows) is infected with viruses, trojans, worms, spyware, etc. Re: Computer boots to System Recovery only, and System Restore failsOptions

Chkdsk /r is probably the first thing I would do. I've seen a couple PCs lately that would BSOD or otherwise fail to boot sorted out this way. Certainly worth a shot if you haven't tried it already.

10-06-2011 04:44 PM Memory test and chkdsk are going to be your best bet. If it still doesn't boot, more than likely you have some system files that have been corrupted. Most malware rely on the OS to be booted and running for it to actuall stop you from doing any type of repairs, but it could have corrupted other things before hand.
You could also sfc/scannow at a command prompt to have it check the system files, but that's a long shot since it goes off a stored copy that could also have been modified.
Last thing I'd do, and I'm not sure if this actually works in Win 7 but does in XP and Vista, would be to delete some of the registry files, the older versions of Windows would recreate them on boot with something of a clean slate, but that's only if you don't have any other options. I would run a recovery rather than doing that unless I didn't have my discs. |
