Can Quicktime Play DVDs?

Was wondering and couldn't find an answer anywhere. Can Apple's Quicktime play DVDs?

Re: Can Quicktime Play DVDs?

Not really.  It can open and play the MPEG-2 VOB's... kinda...  Sometimes it will open them correctly (but w/o sound) and other times it will improperly read the file length.

[ Edited ]
There looks like there is a QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component plugin that you can buy ($20)...

Upon further reading in the FAQ, looks like it will not playback DVD movies... for one it doesn't playback AC3 audio and it also does not play encrypted files... (retail DVDs)

Re: Can Quicktime Play DVDs?

Thanks for the help Swaid. That's dumb. They don't expressly say anywhere on the QuickTime website that it can't play videos--in fact, they mention DVDs at one point. Very misleading. Oh well.

Re: Can Quicktime Play DVDs?

You can get "patch" the free version of Quicktime to the Pro edition that will play almost anything.

Yeah, but I don't think the Pro version can play DVDs. I was tempted to buy Pro, but not unless I could watch DVDs with it (I also want to convert movies to iPod format).

Re: Can Quicktime Play DVDs?

The Quicktime software is slow and clunky, and the Quicktime MPEG4 codec is certified crap. Why bother with it?

Regardless, the real answer to your question lies in whether or not quicktime includes an MPEG2 decoder (which I believe it does) and if it can also decrypt DVDs for watching (which I'm not sure about).

I hear there's a Quicktime DirectShow filter floating around, you might want to try that with another DirectShow-powered media player (*any* other media player, Zoom Player, or WMP), as opposed to trying to force Quicktime to do something it's not really good at.

I think the guys that wrote PSPVideo9 have a similar converter for the ipod video. Much better to buy their program than feed the fires at Apple.

I'll try later, but I am pretty sure you can watch DVDs with the Pro version.

No is correct, you can not.  They amke it really unclear.  The website talks about watching movies in full screen, I assumed DVD movies.  I never tried before, I guess now I know the answer (in addition to Swaid telling me). :smileyhappy:

Re: Can Quicktime Play DVDs?

If you want to buy something get Nero 6 or 7 Ultra. Nero Showtime has played every damn type of video I have thrown at it from game trailers, to DVD, to streaming porn. If you download movies and some of them come in multiple files, like part one and part 2. Nero Vision will put them both together for a seamless full movie and if you want to burn it, will let you put in a menu from a premade menu where you put what text you want for it, or import menus. Good burning software. I like the ease of use with Nero Express just for making a quick cd for the car or a party. Numorous other uses for it. Recoding video and I think audio as well. Just never tried that. Plenty of features and beats paying 30$ for something like Quicktime Pro that really doesn't do anything special. Hell I don't even have the free version of it.

Thank you Ahead software for the pimpij. I will be expecting my check in the mail next week. :smileyhappy:
