In the radioactive realm at ground zero of history's worst nuclear disaster, nature reclaims its territory. And a few defiant old folks are calling it home again.
"...a trio of cackling crones assure me – rheumy eyes crinkling with amusement – that vodka is the best antidote for radiation sickness." ![]()

Very interesting, and surprisingly optimistic.

Hadn't heard anyone returned, but this chick rode through on a motorcycle for years, recording the desolation. Very interesting.
Also, last I heard the concrete encasement was crumbling, which might make it quite hot for anyone returning.

Yeah, that's why they're replacing it next year or so I heard.

That's a great site, Were. Nice pictures and info.
Plus, any girl who would just hop on a bike and check that stuff out (by herself no less) is one cool chick.

Seriously. And very poetic, too. A lot of the stuff she wrote there is really heart-grabbing.

No one listens until a chick on a motorcycle rides through town.

Works for me. Plus she's dressed all in leather - so she smells like a new truck!

Of course the radioactivity might alleviate that issue.. Anyway, both great sites! Those people are brave, most drunk people are, I'm guessing AA is not very popular there. The photos are interesting and bravely acquired.

She carries a Geiger counter and seems educated as to what levels are safe. You can still go to alot of areas, you just need to be careful.
Edit: If you're talking about the people that live there, most of them seem to be old or homeless. I'm sure they're aware, and don't care. If I was 80+ I might not care either.

Yeah, she provides many educated explanations as to how what it is she's doing is safe enough to do. Her father was a nuclear physicist after all and most Ukrainians are very educated in radiation. It's one of those necessary courses like language and math to learn for them.

One thing I found interesting about Chernobyl was how conventional thought turned out to be wrong. Conventional thought holds that dense materials like steel and to a lesser extent concrete absorb and hold more radiation and thus radiate more strongly and long. However what they found in Chernobyl was that trees especially continuously take up contaminated water. Thus trees concentrate the radioactivity and are actually hotter than the buildings.
