Re: Firing Squad Team (Folding Team)

It is only a matter of time before PS3 teams overtake us and plow their way into the top teams.  I'll just be happy if we break the top 100 teams even if it for a second.  I will frame that screen grab and hang it on my living room wall.  Literally.

I should get my Folding@Home fired back up now that I have my QC system and also now that I'm back in school. I could run it while I'm here :smileyvery-happy:

Re: Firing Squad Team (Folding Team)

I've found myself wondering if the PS3 is really that good at folding, or if they're just getting a points bonus because it's a new/experimental client. IIRC the dual-core and GPU clients had (have?) point bonuses attached to them to encourage people to try them out, right? Anybody know?

Re: Firing Squad Team (Folding Team)

Most people are complaining that the PS3 doesn't get enough points for what it does!!
Its design is very well suited for quite a few of the projects that are available, with speeds over 20x faster than a P4 2.8GHz on those projects!
They were give lower points to reflect that they can only do some project quickly.
The same applies to the GPU, but more so (even faster on some projects, but less points than a PS3 as the scope is for only very specialized projects)

Re: Firing Squad Team (Folding Team)

Interesting folding development,

http://kakaostats.com/usum.php?u=863079

As you can see that in less than two days Client, folding for the Cell Bandits team got 3,689,561 points.

Cell Bandits is Sony's R&D department. Most PS3's get around 900 points per day, so is this PS4 testing ?? hehe

Got to make you wonder tho! What, how, how many, and why.

Re: Firing Squad Team (Folding Team)

I think that is a cell based super computer. Running many PS3 WUs simultaneous on each of the super computers. Noted that some of the projects being worked on aren't listed.

Re: Firing Squad Team (Folding Team)

Exactly, super computer, Sony has been saying it but I never believed it.

Average for 24 hours is 2,270,499 points per day, a single PS3 gets 870 ppd = 2,610 PS3's folding

So either the R&D department is very large or they did something else, like make a super PS3 computer (obtw FAH says 3 units folding, which doesn't really mean much but interesting).

I can't wait to find out, and I am sure they will be telling us soon.

FYI, I'm shutting down most of my PCs for now. Too much money and I have a lot of bills I'm going to be dealing with shortly. (Let's just say that lawyers aren't cheap.) My points won't be zero, but they're likely to drop into the range of 2000-4000 PPD.

damn.. went over my bandwidth limit per week (I get 10G per week), so I'm gonna leave F@H off for a while. While I did just reset it, I wanna make sure that it is indeed F@H using up all the bandwidth I get. ... sad.

I don't know for the PS3 - I did a quick look around and only saw guesses. My guess would be about 10MB per WU.

Re: Firing Squad Team (Folding Team)

Well, I'm using my PS3 and my computer for folding, so I'm not sure on the downloads it does. Since my bandwidth is both upload and download, everytime there's an update, my PS3 / Computer upload 10MB every 30 mins, which adds up to a lot (about 1/2 a gig a day!). So for folding uploading there seems to be 3.5GB/week just on uploading. (not 100% sure on this). And then I've noticed that something gets download that varies in size (between 1-3GB) in 90 minutes, and that's normally when I'm sleeping or away, so I'm turning off F@H on my PS3 and my computer for a week, which makes my bandwidth reset pointless, but maybe I'll see if it is indeed the Folding downloading a ton or something else. At least the router, wireless it is, is secured, but idk what the code is or the login is either...

my ps3 is on break right now, as is my pc, so I'm not folding at the current moment. probably should go check to see if my bandwidth is really low as it hasn't been running since like wed.

... edit: and like I thought, since I stopped folding, my usage per day is next to nothing. I suppose I can go ahead and start folding again if I desire.

Re: Firing Squad Team (Folding Team)

Sometimes a project can crash/hang and then you have to terminate the process/reboot/whatever. Often, at that point you've lost the project and any points for it, so delete the work directory before restarting FAH.

I'm having a weird problem, folding 2 sends and receives work correctly, but not folding1. I've set Comodo to allow the exe to accept just about any type of connection, i even started up some Windows services i disable when i first install it. They each have their own directory, machine ID and run with "-configonly -advmethods -forceasm -local" tags :smileyindifferent: I've noticed it sends the work to different servers, could that be the problem??? Isn't it weird it receives WUs, but can't send them back? The X2 is having no problems.

Can you double check to see if the "use internet explorer settings" configuration item is set to no on the client with the problem?

Re: Firing Squad Team (Folding Team)

I'm thinking of getting into folding. As far as I understand it, just download/run the software. I've got the general concept of why, all of the people running this together gets them more processing power than they could on their own, to run simulations/tests. I guess I've only really got two questions. How much of my system's resources will this eat (I'm assuming just about all of it. A leave it running when you go to bed program.), and how do you run this on a PS3?

Re: Firing Squad Team (Folding Team)

[ Edited ]
The regular console client (the usual recommended one for PCs), have user configurable settings to fine tune just how much CPU and RAM resources to let it use. I and most people leave it on all the time including while gaming.
One thing is that the CPU use is at such a low priority that it will only use the CPU that is otherwise idle. That said, after we've done some tests on our own, it appears that over the 85% to 95% CPU idle selection we can sometimes see a minor impact in some cases (most likely due to windows overhead), so setting the CPU maximum usage to be 80% should be a nice safe "no impact" level (e.g. benchmarks should show no significant differences with or without folding).
The other part is RAM use - here you can select the project size to be maximum 5MBs in size (so the total memory use would be around 10MB) or can pick another number (e.g. 64MB) depending on what available memory you have.

Unlike the PC, it doesn't run while doing other things on the PS3 (although might be able to browse the Internet?). For more details on the PS3, I suggest check the official FAQ at http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-PS3

am about to upgrade to a new Intel Quad Core 6600 with its 8MB cache from my old Opteron - see sig -

but, still trying to resist for a  month or so and get its replacement that has 12MB cache  ^^

The new chip has a lower multipleir than the Q6600 though, so may not be so easy to OC...

What you guys reckon, is the extra cache worth the wait...?  I understand folding@home loves large caches.

Re: Firing Squad Team (Folding Team)

I'm downloading Demo's to my PS3 (damn is the PS store ever slow).  I figured I'd make use of my PS3 since it was on and added it to the FiringSquad group.

It's already completed one work unit, and it's working on it's second.

Hello distort, good to have you join us 8)

Well some WU's like cache and some like speed with out much regard for cache. It depends also on if you are going to run single instances or SMP folding (which is where the big points are at). With normal WU's a few WU's are very sensitive to large caches and score a lot of extra points, however it is very hit a miss if you are going to get one of the good ones.

In smp folding a quad core 6600 seems to give up a lot of what the dual core e6600 gains from the large cache, because of it's slow fsb communications.

A quad core vs a dual core using the standard SMP client folding folding a common WU 2653 the dual core will score 2100 ppd while the quad will do 26-2700ppd (points per day), no not even close to twice as fast.

There are ways around this restriction on Quads but they are much more intrusive and pretty much require a folding only solution.

Also overclocking is going to speed up any wu and that depends on your mb as well as your cpu. A Q6600 1066 fsb with a high multiplier vs a 1333 fsb processor with a low multiplier should be much easier to oc, if they start out at the same speed and have the same potential.

So the new generation should be faster at folding on some WU's because of cache, and it may oc better or at least as well. However, it will probably require a much more expensive mb and better ram to do so. Either should perform well at folding.

Re: Firing Squad Team (Folding Team)

Heya synanjin,

thanks for the info, didn't know about the SMP client yet lol

I think I will try and hold out a little while longer and see how the new chips turn out :smileyhappy:
was planning on shelling out for high end RAM anyway, so hopefully can OC one of those just as well as the current Q6600

welcome to the team distort ^^

bye for now

I just haven't posted much, er..  at all.
