Is it supposed to be a horror game? I looked at the screenshots and whatnot, and it just looked like your average FPS. Cookie-cutter shooters just don't do much for me anymore.

It's not a cookie-cutter shooter. It's pretty unique and very horrific. It's also a TPS, not an FPS.
I actually never got around to getting further than ~1 hour into the first game, but the second is pretty awesome and much better polished. Loads of action, but you're constantly being tortured psychologically, as well.
Have the 2nd but only played the first. I enjoyed the first one but it lacked on the horror aspect. All it had was a slightly creepy atmosphere and the random startle. Not very scarey but still a pretty good game. I think I might fire up the 2nd one this week.
