i'll definitely have to check that out. is it a program or do you need to install a probe?
yeah i read A LOT or reviews that highly recommended the prolimatech megahalem as the best air cooled cpu heatsink for the i7. i haven't heard of the mugen 2 though.
it seems you highly recommend it though...

Coretemp is a program. Just download it. It uses the existing on die sensors which already exist on your setup

download a program called Prime95. Just start it up and it will prompt to run a 4 thread blended test...click ok. Your cpu is completely, 100% stressed out now. If your computer isn't 100% stable, you will crash.

I have my old computer scores up in the 3dmark thread...over 22K.
My core i7 system with a single mildly overclocked gtx 260 scores mid 19K's. I can get 20K with more overclocking. I won't be doing another official run until I get more video card horse power.
I gave my wife my complete old computer...she needed more power and I didn't want to tweak and pull parts in and out of it...so she even took my beloved Lian Li case lol
oh well, I wasn't going to object to her telling me to go out and get a new computer lol

I've got the computer overclocked to 4.2ghz now with turbo enabled. Unfortunately, it isn't prime 95 stable with turbo enabled. HOWEVER, at 4ghz (turbo off), the computer is 100% prime 95 stable and my temps never exceed mid 70's onload (thanks to the mugen 2). I was a little surprised with how good my temps were when the internet is filled with stories of people hitting 80's-90's, so there may be more juice left in this CPU. I bet I can get 4.1-4.2ghz out of it. We'll see how ambitious I get.
If anyone is curious, here are my overclock settings to achieve 4ghz. BTW, the Gigabyte X58-UD3R is a rock solid overclocking motherboard. I wasn't expecting this because the UD3R is also the cheapest X58 board out there...

CAn you give me some numbers, or tell me how to come up with my own, for a decent 3.6-3.8 everyday overclock. do you recommend this kind of overclock for everyday use? all i've adjusted is the bckl numbers i think i bumped mine up to 175 and i've got 3.51, but i'm interested in the custom numbers you can enter below that. do those lead to a more rock solid oc?

with the Asus X58 boards, you really only need to raise the bclk. I went with a gigabyte board this time around and leaving it on "auto" like you would on the asus board will get you 3.2ghz max. So I had to tweak the numbers above. The big one above is the CPU voltage. You'll probably need to raise this up to get 4ghz. The others, if you don't have to touch them, don't. Also, some motherboards overclock better with a lower multiplier, so depending on how that goes, you might have to drop your mutli to 19 or 18 and raise your bclk even higher. Its all about finding what works with your motherboard and CPU. There are only guidelines available but all CPU's are slightly different so you need to spend time to discover what works and what doesn't.
If all you want to do is 3.6ghz everyday (and this is a very good frequency to run at), I'd probaby just raise the bclk as you did. that's perfectly good on the asus board you have.
before you start tweaking, download CPUz. It is a nice utility that gives you some useful information about your computer. Also, download CoreTemp. It is a nice temp reading utility...and both are free.

ha...no need to go to a book store. the internet is all you really need. Or come to forums like this. Google is a really good friend too!
Everything you want to do or are about to do, we have already done it. You can learn from our experiences...there are good technical sites out there where there are some hardcore guys/girls...like the OCforums. Just read the overclocking articles on the net. I can provide you with some links if you like, or just google. You lucky because your motherboard is one of the easier overclocking motherboards out there. It's actually sick easy to get a decent overclock on your motherboard. Just download those two utilities to see what your voltages are and CPUz will tell you what frequency you are really running at
