This is an agp slot(the BROWN slot) -

...and this is a PCI-E slot(the long YELLOW slot) -

Note that the colours won't always be the same on every board, but the agp slots are usually brown.

I don't see the brown slot and also IS there another way to tell the difference besides color. I thought AGP was shorter but I"m just a NOOB. :smileyhappy:

Yes, the agp slot is shorter then a pci-e slot. The pci-e cards have a small piece of the connector seperated from the rest of the longer piece by a small space in between. Here's a link to what an agp card connector looks like on the graphics card and here's a link to what the connector for a pci-e card looks like to further clarify.

AGP is the black slot. PCIe is the white long slot. AGP is placed more inside the motherboard than any other expansion slot.

Well, thats brown and the PCIe slots are also the 2 short ones just above the (brown) AGP slot.

Another way to try and distinguish the difference is the pin count.  PCIe has a greater pin count in the same amount of space.  AGP is also offset further back than PCIe (or PCI).

Re: PCI-E and AGP........... How can you tell the difference between the slots on the MB???

I've found the best method for quickly distinguishing between the slots is to look for the pin separator/spacer.

^  In a PCI Express slot (x16 pictured), the separator will always be to the far left.

In a standard PCI slot, the separator will always be to the far right.  The slot will usually be white, but not always.

In an AGP slot, there will either be no separator, or it will be more towards the middle.  An AGP slot will also be offset about an inch to the right of the other slots.  It will usually be brown, but not always.

ok I think I got it....so PCI-E the seperator is to the right and AGP is almost in the middle. THANX :smileyhappy:
OH YEAH WHAT ABOUT RAM??? DDR OR DDR2 :smileysad: sorry for asking all these questions. :smileysad:

well I don't know what you mean. I got a PC from my grandma and I'm gonna upgrade the RAM and Video as soon as I know what I need to know. But I don't know how to find out what type or RAM I have.

Download CPUZ (yes it is safe) and it should tell you most of the information you need.

^ Goto the 'Memory' tab.  The top-left will have a field labeled 'Type'.  In this field it will display the memory type.

Yeah, CPU-Z is great.  It will tell you everything you need to know.  From memory type to brand of mobo to graphics slots.  It also provides info on memory timings and cpu stepping.:smileyhappy:
