I had my original Promedia 5.1 set go out after a few years (and past the warranty). Klipsch extended my warranty, sent me a brand new set of the upgraded Ultras, and then paid for my shipping to send the old ones back. Service like that is worth the extra cost.
A friend of mine bought a set of the Z680's off EBay, and it turned out that the guy he bought them off of sent a set in to be RMA'd, and simply changed his address to my friends address, and had the replacements sent there.
Well, the replacements went out after a week, but Logitech wouldn't honor the warranty because he wasn't the original buyer. Through Tech Support, he determined that the faulty item was the Volume Control pod where the decoders are also located, but Logitech refused to sell him another one, even if he paid for it.
Their logic with that, is someone could take the Control Pod and use it on another set of speakers to get Dolby Digital and DTS. They don't want people to do this using competitors speakers, or even one of their own cheaper sets.
Nevermind that many soundcards allready come with built in decoders....Logitech is just doing this to be a pain. That sort of stuff gets negative marks in my book. Go with Klipsch if you've got a soundcard with built in decoders. They will take care of you and the sound quality is just awesome.

I ordered the z-680s awhile back for $320 with my business acct. They came damaged through shipping so I get bumped up to the z-5500s at the end of this month. Now those will be sweet. But if you have the chance pick up the 680s, they are by far the best 5.1 system I've ever heard and 1000w (505RMS) is quite amazing for a PC.

The sub takes more power becuase its physically BIGGER than the previous model (z680). Who cares if the power rating is less for the fronts, there is no way you would be sitting at your computer and have those full blast. You would get a headache pretty damn fast. And if you needed something beyond those, then you better not be looking for "PC" speakers to fill that void. Spend the extra $500 and buy a real sound system. Most PC speakers sold are in the 3-5watts per channel, you can't really directly compare but you have an idea. 62 watts is plenty of power for those small speakers to knock you on your ass (figuratively speaking).

Novaesck wrote:Exactly, so I don't see the need to out and buy the Z-5500s if I already have Z680s.The sub is barely on whenever I use them so I don't understand why they made it have even more bass, if anything they should have put tweeters on the speakers.
Who suggested you go out and replace your perfectly fine z680's for z5500? The z680's are just being phased out and the z5500's are its replacement. But for someone getting a new set and were previously looking at purchasing the z680's the little bit extra to get the z5500 (what, $20 more? Assuming no sales/clearences were involved) would probably be worth it.

I've heard both Z680s and the Promedia 5.1s side by side. The Z680s are clearly superior.I have had my set for 2 years now and no problems, I also know 4 other people personally with them and they also have no problems.Who cares if your soundcard already supports one or two of these decoding features? The point of the 680s is that you can hook them to several sources. Right now mine are connected to my computer, dvd-player, digital cable, and my mini-disc player. So what you're saying is that since I have an Audigy 2 having hardware supported DTS and Dolby Digital decoders is pointless? Well I don't like to watch movies in stereo.. I can tell you right now that the Promedias would be worthless if I tried to do alot of the things I do with the 680s.
That's why you get one of these. I picked one up when I got my original set of Promedias, because the analog out on the nForce1 was horrendous. I'm no longer using it because I don't need to with my soundcard, but it's there for if I ever do. When it comes down to it, all speakers are analog devices anyway. Anyone can buy a preamp for decoding needs.
Now....as for the Z680's sounding better....were both systems set up identically? Was there any software equalizers turned on?? I seriously find that hard to believe, especially against the Ultras. It depends on your tastes though. I prefer very clean balanced sound, some people like overpowering bass and would be fine with tiny, underpowered midrange drivers.
Although....I haven't heard the Z680's for quite a while, seeing as how my friend's set doesn't work.
