Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 3.46GHz

Ouch. Never thought I'd see the day when the other big blue got smacked around so hard =/

It's kinda nice isn't it.  I've been using AMD chips almost from the start of computing. I've been pulling for them ever since. I'm glad to see they've finally got an amazing product of which intel has a hard time to compete with.

I never cheer for any company. AMD would squeeze consumers the same way Intel did if AMD had the market position Intel had in the early 90s.

I do cheer against companies though, like Rambus.

Re: Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 3.46GHz

Yeah. I like to see AMD turn up the heat a little bit since Intel had such a huge lead, just so that they both work harder to release better products. When it comes down to it though, I buy the best product out at the time.

A year ago when I built this, AMD64's were overpriced and they didn't have the best motherboard support yet (nForce3 150 and some VIA garbage). I felt that the P4 Northwood was a better choice than a similarly priced Athlon XP 3000+.

At that point, I had also been a longtime fan of NVidia, and I was keeping my eye on the 5900 regular for some time. I had a hard time getting over how poorly it performed compared to the 9800 Pro, so I decided to go with that.

So...I went from AMD/NVidia to Intel/ATI. At the time I think it was the better choice. If I were to build today it would be a different story, but I'm waiting for at least the next generation of videocards. At that point I'll reaccess what's out there as far as the rest of the system goes.

Computers are different in that you have to buy for today, not tomorrow. That's why I stress the S754 over the pricier and lower clocked S939's. If you keep a S939 for a year or two, chances are very high that when you upgrade you'll need a new motherboard and all new memory anyhow. That's also why I stress cheaper memory, but most don't want to hear my rhetoric.

Re: Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 3.46GHz

The main reason I've stuck with AMD is because I don't have cash. They've always been cheaper. If intel was lower priced, I'd go with them. There's only one thing I'm brand loyal to and that's vehicles. I'm a Toyota buyer and probably always will be simply because I feel they make the best product. I'm glad AMD has stepped up cause now there is true competition. That can only mean good things for us consumers. Lower prices and better products being the result.

Re: Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 3.46GHz

Yea, I agree with the whole cash thing. I'm poor, naturally, as I've started a thread on that too (hey, my job is closer to being acquired! someone got fired last week, so now I'm next on the list to get a job there :smileyhappy:). anyway, Intel/AMD, whoever has the best CPU for the best price is what I'd get, but then AMD sneakily added 64 bit, so I'm all questioning that if its worthwhile at the current moment. No worries for me though, I'm poor and would rather have the faster gaming CPU anyway.

I loved seeing my CPU beating the 3.46EE.

Re: Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 3.46GHz

Nice review. My one question (after reading both the Anandtech and FS articles on the P4XE 3.46) is this:

Is it possible to put a Prescott 2.8E into the 925XE motherboard and overclock it to 3.73 GHz? I'm not sure if there is a built in throttle in the P4 chips that would prevent that or not. It's not something I'm really dying to know, but I would be interested to see if 925XE offers better OC support out of the box. (I know that ASUS and others have bypassed the 10% OC limitation of the 915/925 chipsets, but I'm still curious to know if there's something else in the P4 chips that would block the use of a 1066 FSB.)
