I wish they use that engine to do a SF game. I miss x-com too much, and I consider the WW2 theme much too constrictive for something of this caliber.

Re: Silent Storm/review discussion

I would have to say on the whole I pretty much agree with FS's review of this game. I tried the SS demo to see if it was for me. I decided not to purchase SS on the following:

First, I didn't feel like I was even in control of what was happening. I mean that in the sense of an ex-X-COM player. In X-COM you had control over what veichles you would use, base building, weapons your troops would carry, even which troops would go on the next mission. In SS though I just felt like I had no control over anything(maybe its not like this in the full game, I don't know).

Second, as the review stated the super weapons in this game really don't sound like they belong. They weren't in the demo mission but from the descriptions I read they sound like they are invicible suits of armor that have rocket launchers on them. Really seemed outta place for the setting as they were historically acurate about everything else.

Now don't get me wrong here, SS looks like it will really appeal to those that love these types of games. Personally I'm more of a RPG/FPS type of player but I did throughly enjoy the old X-COM series of games. What I liked about those games though seemed missing from SS(and that being the aliens attacking your custom made bases, total control over veichles and weapons etc etc).

The nice thing is the developer put out a pretty hefty demo of SS so you don't need to take any reviewers word for it, just download it and check it out.

Re: Silent Storm/review discussion

In the full version of the game you do get to choose who you bring along and what weapons they wield.  Characters accumulate experience and levels from mission to mission.  There is no base building or research, sadly.

Re: Silent Storm/review discussion

I know the review refers a lot to Xcom, but isn't it more like Jagged Alliance?

Re: Silent Storm/review discussion

Yeah, it's more similar to Jagged Alliance, but more people are familiar with X-Com than JA.

Re: Silent Storm/review discussion

JA is awesome! I can't believe not a lot of people are not familiar with that game. I remember my favorite character: Ivan. Granted he doesn't speak English (only Russian), he's the best sharpshooter straight from the beginning. Even when I turn on the subtitles, the wordings were in Russian :smileyhappy:

Re: Silent Storm/review discussion

HEAR HEAR! x-com: apocolypse is still the best tbs mostly bc EVERYTHING is dectructable and i mean EVERYTHING walls, floors, ceilings, statues, tables, everything! u can carve a path thru a wall with a plasma gun if u really want to... to far to the door? blow up the wall instead and presto instant door. personally i think someone should buy the fallout/x-com rights and use a decent engine (like the one this game so proudly sports) then wed have some good gaming fun!

*sighs

i miss fallout/x-com games (x-com apocolypse for raiding rival companies, and fallout for rpging goodness the likes of which are noticably absent in todays games and recently rivaled by arcanum and SS)

btw love the new look :smileyhappy:

Bad framerate killed it for me.

Re: Silent Storm/review discussion

Just wanted to let you know that Silent Storm was selected as the best PC game of the year in Finland by the readers of the Finland's largest gaming magazine. It was also the second best game overall, when you count in the consoles as well. It's nice to see that a "smaller" game like this is getting nice reviews and I was kinda suprised that GameSpy selected it as the game of the month. Hopefully it will sell well so that we can get a sequal.

I'm playing it, just bot it, loving the realism. So far it looks like the Fallout Tactics killer, or any tactics based game killer. Performance is awful tho! Think Simcity 4, when trying to drag the screen to move to another area. It's ok when the screen don't move, the animation is acceptable i.e. 20fps. But bigger levels are at 5-10 fps, which suck.

This is my system:

Re: Silent Storm/review discussion

Sad to say this, but it sounds like your computer just isn't capable of doing all the work that Silent Storm requires of it, In-Tel.  If any others are having issues, here is what to try.

Open up the file "config.cfg" in the game directory.  Then, use these options to try to gain speed:

1)  setvar gfx_cl = 0.00

This will disable some of the more complex stuff, so you might be able to play at decent rates.  If that doesn't work, the next one really should.

2)  setvar gfx_tnl_mode = 1.00

You lose shadows and lots of other special effects, but the game still looks pretty good and it should no longer slow to a crawl.  The poor 9700 is not working very hard now, though.  :smileysad:

For reference, I have a P3 1.46 GHz, 512 MB SDRAM, Asus TUSL2-C motherboard, GF4 Ti4200 64 MB graphics, onboard sound.  That's a pretty pathetic system for gaming, compared to most, but I am still able to play Silent Storm with the "TNL" mode enabled.  As far as I can tell, there is no way to directly get the same effect with the in-game detail settings.  I could be wrong.  Search the forums at http://forum.nival.com/ for more information on the subject.

Re: Silent Storm/review discussion

Incidentally, I think this game kicks serious butt.  Very fun turn-based strategy... the best since Fallout: Tactics, which was the best since JA2.  Or maybe Heroes of Might and Magic III belongs in between those last two?  Anyway, if you liked any of the JA, X-COM, or FO:T games, then you should really enjoy this game.  Anyone with less than a 2800+/2.6C processor might need to downgrade the graphics, though.  The difference between "medium" and "high" detail settings is pretty major, and it will hit your CPU harder than it will hit your graphics card.

I have a system waay slower than In-tel's. I just turned down the graphics for performance and it's still fun.

Yeah but I want the pretty graphics! I noticed the difference between AA and non-AA is HUGE in terms of quality of graphics and the performance. Awesome game, but one feature that I don't like is the interupt feature, it makes the turn based game become a "chanced turn based" game. Often I know the enemy is there, but once I walk out to try to shoot him, he interupts my move 1/4 of the time he mows me down with an auto burst. They should really tone down the chace of an interupt. It would make sense only in very special occaions, i.e. when the hide button is pressed and not in most battle situations.

I think it's more very simular to Fallout Tactics even in the battle interface.

Re: Silent Storm/review discussion

Just finished the demo level of the game, what, no one mentioned the rag-doll physics?! totally awesome. You can even shoot up dead bodies. And I was surprised that things were destructible too, like railings, windows, etc.

I felt REALLY constricted with the free-floating camera though, I always want to view the battlefield in a certain way, but the axis locks prevent me from doing that. I just don't like the top-down too much. I do like the ability to zoom in and out though.

It is really fun, from what I found, none-the-less - but I will probably just play the first 2 levels included in this demo, and that's it. I just don't have the time I used to have when playing x-com back in the day. I really like how playing this is just like playing xcom though, it was really easy to get into the groove.

Re: Silent Storm/review discussion

The Interrupt adds real tactics to things.  So you can have four of your crew move, and two save their movement to cover them.  If you walk around a corner or whatever and find an enemy there, rather than taking one shot and risking an Interrupt, switch to an SMG and go full burst on him.  If there are a couple enemies around the corner, retreat.  :smileyhappy:

Yeah I know. But the interrupt feature was also in JA. I guess I never related FOT  to S2 because I always played FOT in real-time rather than turn-based for more interesting strategy. :smileyhappy:
