The future of one of the greatest FPS franchises of recent memory has been up in the air since December, with rumors that developer GSC Game World had suddenly shut down. After about a month-long silence, we were told work on STALKER 2 was still on-going, but now we have news that the project is officially dead in the water. To quote the official Twitter feed, "Money was not the issue, we were unable to secure the IP rights and thus unable to continue development."
Today it was revealed that the entire team working on STALKER 2 has formed a new indie studio, Vostok Games, and will be carrying on their vision and ideas in a new game tentatively titled Survarium. Since the guy who owned GSC Game World and decided to shut it down also owned the rights to STALKER IP and content, they're having to come up with something new. They decided on a free-to-play MMOFPS set in the near future:
The game focuses on a mass-scale ecological catastrophe on Earth, the reasons behind vaguely known.
Impassable woods advance onto cities from every side, maddened animals and birds attack industrial complexes, military structures, warehouses and power plants. Strange plants and mushrooms grow through concrete and steel. Scientists all over the world haplessly try to cope with the anomaly sprawling across the Earth with terrifying speed. Countries collapse, anarchy spreads throughout the world. Now force dictates who to survive.
Basically, it looks like a STALKER MMO, but without the Zone, Duty and Freedom, mutants and artifacts, etc. While it's true that the series' gameplay is perfectly suited to an MMO game, I just hope they can pull it off. Seems like something they'd need longer than a couple years to put together (currently aiming for a end-of-2013 release), unless they've already been working on it for a while.

I doubt it... if The Secret World was supposed to be like a STALKER MMO, I think more people would be excited.
On another note, major rumor claims the STALKER brand has been sold to Bethesda.

Oh great.. so I guess the next game will be S.K.Y.R.I.M.

Now rumor has it that Bethesda bought up the rights to make a STALKER game for consoles and PC using their piece of shit GameBry- er... sorry, "Creation Engine." No official announcement has been made as of yet, obviously, but "trustworthy sources" say that owner of the IP Sergey Grigorovich has licensed the video game rights to the developer/publisher of The Elder Scrolls, Fallout 3/NV, etc. but still maintains the brand name for other uses including merchandising.

That sucks... I'm making my way through Clear Sky at the moment. The first game was much better, it had a solitary vibe that I highly prefer in games, too many group battles and clans ruin the atmosphere. I have no interest in any MMO so this new game is certainly no replacement for a new S.T.A.L.K.E.R. in my books. And a Bethesda S.T.A.L.K.E.R.? That's really lame, how would they match the Ukrainian vibe?
Playing: S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky (PC)

Clear Sky is definitely the experimental departure from the series. If you liked SHOC better, you'll be happy when you make it to the third one, Call of Pripyat.
