How did you get a pre release of the game? Did you get to play it?

Re: Rome: Total War Preview

There was a tv series here in the uk (I think it was called 'Time Commanders') that pretty much was the Rome Total War game engine (wouldnt be surprised if it was the historical battles from the game they were using), I always wondered if that show delayed the game being released.

Because that's all that Activision released.  Well, those are the new ones, there's still some older stuff floating around.

I didn't, Activision flew me and a bunch of other editors in to play.  We only got to fool around with multiplayer though.

I kicked all their asses.

Re: Rome: Total War Preview

I've played a lot of Empire Earth, and Empire, Dawn of the Modern World.  Not the most visually stimulating games, but the multiplayer side of it is great.  I preffer the original, the games have a more "massive" approach.  And the AI is good.  Normally 4 or 5 of us get together and play.

My question is, is there any type of multiplayer game mentioned?  I think it would make for some awsome multiplayer games, although they would probably last the better part of a day judging by the vastness of the game! :smileyvery-happy:

Yes, there is multiplayer.  I don't THINK you can do the turn-based portion in it (but don't quote me on that).  What you can do for sure is play historical battles, battles on random maps (where you buy forces with points, if Rome is anything like Medieval), etc.

Re: Rome: Total War Preview

Marc Antony is not part of the Caesar family. He was a great friend to Julius Caesar and when Julius died, he tried to take over the Roman Empire. Romans who at first had loved and supported Antony soon began to distrust him when they saw that he chose to marry the Egyptian queen Cleopatra and spent most of his time with her in Egypt. Octavian made matters even worse for Antony by telling the Romans that he intended to turn the Roman Empire into a province of an Egyptian kingdom. Caesar's grandson Octavian challenged him and killed Marc.

I'm not sure you'll see historical figures like that per se. Remember, the family tree is dynamic so while you might not have THE Marc Antony or THE Scipio Africanus, you can have generals you guide through similar careers.

Re: Rome: Total War Preview

I heard something about arranged marriges in the diplomactic part of the game. Does that
mean that you can have girls?

Re: Rome: Total War Preview

Two questions:

1. Can you have girls.

2. And can you adopt generals to become your heir.

Re: Rome: Total War Preview

Does it have the epic battle-music that Medieval has? It really added to the game. Also, looking this crazy, with high detail and crowded with units, how many organs do I have to sell for PC-upgrades to play this thing smoothly?

Yes about the music, and actually I don't think you'll need hardware that's all that crazy to run Rome smoothly.  My guess would be that a P4 2.0 with 512MB and a GeForce 3 Ti or GeForce 4 class card should do quite fine.  Minimum requirements are likely to be even lower than that.

Re: Rome: Total War Preview

I heard somewhere that there was something different with the provinces, like they aren't defined and you can move a certain distance as opposed to 1 province at a time.  Is this correct?

Re: Rome: Total War Preview

For some, Multiplayer is the best part of the experience :smileywink:

As you have experienced Rome Multiplayer, can I ask you for more information about the experience?
What factions did you play (to kick arse with), what are your views on the units you used/unit balance, did you play over lan or is there already a multiplayer server out there (is it Gamespy??) waiting for us.  What is the maximum number of players per game (4v4 as it is now for Medieval?).  What struck you as the best and worst parts of the game?  How many maps will be available for the Multiplayers to choose from?
