02-01-2009 06:46 PM I woke up early and finished Gabriel Knight 2 this morning. I played it for hours and hours on end yesterday and it gave me some really weird dreams. It was a great game and a worthy entry in the series. Maybe it is the dated FMV, maybe it was coming off the far deeper 'Sins of the Father', maybe it was just a victim of hype but it just wasn't the opus I remember it being. It was certainly an entertaining and polished experience and I still hold it up as a pillar for the genre, but I can't help but feeling a little let down for some reason. Anyway, I'm thinking I'm going to move on to its older brother now; Phantasmagoria.

I too am gonna start playing some of my older stuff. Granted, the stuff tha's been sitting on my shelf isn't nearly as vintage, but I made a pact with myself to finally delve into my GOG games, NOLF 2, Armed & Dangerous, Mafia, Max Payne 2, etc. Been sitting on those and more for quite a while now.

02-02-2009 12:32 AM - edited 02-02-2009 12:33 AM I just finished the Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II I've been playing. The odd thing is that I was thinking how complex the game was "complex in a good way", but after I finished it and saw the ending, I was thinking about how simple the game was.
My rating of 9.3 for the game which I gave before I finished it might have been a little enthusiastic I'm starting to think, though for an NES game I would probably give it that and probably wouldn't rate it under an 8.5 overall. Message Edited by SuperCharge on 02-02-2009 12:33 AM

I don't know how well NOLF 2 and Armed & Dangerous have aged but they were both great games at launch. NOLF 2 is more NOLF which is a damned good thing. (why no NOLF 3 anyway?) Armed & Dangerous was one of the funniest games I played in years and to this day has some of the best weapons this side of Duke3D. I have to agree on the GoG stuff. For as many games as I've bought from the service, I haven't gotten much time in with any yet though sometime soon. I'm kinda' glad new releases are pretty sparse this time of year because I still have a few holiday 08 games to play through and I'm loving me some retro gaming. Man I miss gaming in the 90s.
SC: How long do you think you spent with that Star Tropic's game? Sure sounds like you got your $6 worth.

02-02-2009 01:03 PM I just downloaded and started playing the Portal map pack called, Portal the Flash Version Map Pack (http://portalmaps.wecreatestuff.com/) for PC. It's a fan made mission that takes you through the enrichment centre again, but along a different route to that in the original (well, obviously!). I will not give too much away, but I will say this is an excellent mission pack, and well worth the play. Apparently some of the maps were incorporated into the extra maps that were made available for the XBox version of Portal.
Only drawback with these maps is that if you have to have Half Life 2 installed for them to work, so if you bought Portal as a stand-alone and not part of the Orange Box then you have to have an install of HL2 to play it.
Also still playing my way through Fallout. The Turbo Plasma Rifle is not just a pretty name for a gun. It's a very pretty gun!

Whenever there are achievements for a game, I feel compelled to get them. So, I guess that is a good thing, as it makes games last longer. I've still got to get a whole bunch more achievements in Fallout 3 so that I can hit my "50% of achievements" mark, which is a personal "pass" for me and about as far as I'll go for achievements in games. That said, I still detest GFWL's interface. ![]() Playing: S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky (PC) Re: Quick thoughts on the games you're playing now.Options
02-19-2009 09:52 AM Well I guess I've stagnated on Phantasmagoria. I made it up to chapter 3 but now the nostalgia seems to have worn off a little and I haven't touched it about a week. It's still a good game but I kind of know what to expect having played through it before so I don't have the mystery to pull me through. I should just finish it though considering it is not a long or difficult game. For some reason I've got a strong urge to pull out Laura Bow 1 & 2 next.
Also, I've been killing time in GTA4 pc now that I finally got it working. I'm doing a few missions here and there but mostly I'm just going around causing chaos. It's the same game as I played on the 360 but using a trainer for god mode and infinite ammo allows me to break the game in some devilishly fun ways.

I'm sure this is old news by now, but wow bioshock is amazing! I dont particularly like creepy/scary games, and I dont think I have finished an entire FPS since half life 2, but i am in love with this game. the art direction, the story, the music/sound, the cool rpg'ish twists, it all combines to make for one incredibly immersive and enjoyable experience. seriously, its been such a long time since i've looked forward to playing a video game this badly. i haven't finished but hopefully this weekend. great game.....BTW even with the patch the ps3 version has weird texture glitches quite frequently.

02-25-2009 06:46 PM I just finished playing BioShock. It was a fine game, for sure. The gameplay wasn't particularly fantastic, but it was fun and at times frantic shooting action, and that's never bad. The graphics were nice, other than the human character models (because of Unreal Engine 3's dedication to making everything look like plastic). The sound was phenomenally good, some of the best of any game I've played. The highlights of BioShock were the environment and the story. Rapture (the setting of the game) is beautiful and vast, and I never got tired of just looking around. The plot was very well done, with many surprises and tons of interesting dialogue. I still don't think that it was quite as good as its System Shock predecessors, however, due to an inferior atmosphere and a lack of complexity.

because i feel i must play and finish at least one zelda game in my lifetime, i picked up twilight princess for the wii. so far it seems pretty good, although i dont really enjoy the wolf parts. hopefully i will be able to see what all the fuss is about, everyone seems to be in love with the series. From the little i played of the other zelda's i never really understood how or why it got so much praise, maybe i did not play long enough? anyhow i plan on finishing this game no matter what, and then maybe ill understand. I don't really think Twilight Princess is the top-notch of the Zelda series, I think to really become a Zelda fan you have to start with or play something like Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES) or Zelda Ocarina of Time. Message Edited by SuperCharge on 02-26-2009 11:07 AM

Just curious, what do those two titles do better than twilight princess? With this particular series i wonder where the nostalgic fandom ends and reality begins you know? Is it because people played previous iterations of the game that they love the series so much, or does the zelda series stand on its own two feet title to title? This is by no means an attack on the franchise, i am just curious and for the first time i have a chance to see for myself, i guess i better get to it! See, the thing about Twilight Princess was that it just felt like other games to a degree and didn't feel like an "original". About half of the game feels like a brand new copy of Ocarina of Time though.
I think to really enjoy the games and become a real Zelda fan you have to go back the the original (first one) on NES (or just the Wii Virtual Console channel)... that was pretty basic. Now to move up a step from that and to get a game that does a lot of things well, there is A Link to the Past. Or that is also a good game to start with. Then to see the workings of 3D you move up to Ocarina of Time. Sure there are other Zelda games out there and some of them have pretty good merit, but I think if someone does like Twilight Princess they might just be saying they like the game itself or certain implementations, not that they like Zelda (games) itself. That's just my opinion. It's like listening to one song from a band to try to see what all the fuss with the band is about, and then the song wasn't even a classic one by them, just the band trying something different. I've played and beaten every Zelda game (other than the sacrilege that is Phantom Hourglass, but I'm almost done it)... and Twilight Princess is my pick for best of the series. It is definitely top-notch. It's also the easiest and best-paced Zelda game, so I heartily recommend it as a good starter's Zelda game. ![]() Playing: S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky (PC) Re: Quick thoughts on the games you're playing now.[ Edited ]Options

Well, that is your opinion... I think we're two different kind of Zelda fans since we probably wouldn't agree on things like Majora's Mask, Ocarina of Time, etc. I tend to base my experience/like around either the original Zelda NES or Zelda Ocarina of Time which I feel still represents Zelda well. With Twilight Princess I didn't like the whole wolf-transformation thing and such and some of the "atmosphere" of the game and the game just felt mainstream. I meant mainstream in a way where it is too geared to attracting non-Zelda fans without really focusing on something solid to attract Zelda fans. Maybe with the exception of making about half the game seem similar to Ocarina of Time in ways. Mainstream to me = working to attract people to something without really focusing on what is true self. Basically trying to do something different. Message Edited by SuperCharge on 02-26-2009 05:39 PM

I disagree. Other than the Wii port (which was done just to get more sales of the Wii console) and the general lack of difficulty, the game was a shining example of fan service. There were tons of architectural, musical, and plot references to other Zelda games (most notably Ocarina of Time, but there was also plenty of A Link to the Past), the world map was the biggest yet of any Zelda game, there was a massive array of sidequests, and the dungeons were significantly better layed out than in any 3D Zelda game to date. As a matter of fact, the very premise of Twilight Princess was to be a Zelda game "for the fans" after the overwhelmingly negative reception towards The Wind Waker's visual style.

I'm aware of that but I don't try to make that intention into a fact of what it was. I think Wind Waker captured some things well gameplay-wise but it was just the graphics style was different than what (some/most) people wanted. Re: Quick thoughts on the games you're playing now.Options

02-27-2009 11:41 PM - edited 02-28-2009 07:56 AM Finished Phantasmagoria earlier today. Twas good fun and a nice trip down memory lane but ultimately, the game is 'pretty good' at best. I'm all about easy games but this one takes it a little far; boiling down to progressing merely by finding the right hot spots to trigger the next event. Nothing really counted as a puzzle and even the timed sequence at the end was more memorization than anything else. Of course this would be forgivable if the story were better but it is cliche-city to the extreme. It was fun to see the integration between FMV and pre-rendered backgrounds, there were a few great gory moments (Adrien's face getting ripped off by the demon in ch7 was definitely the highpoint of the game), and the real star of the game was exploring the house itself but... [6/10] edit: btw, if anyone cares, the best moments from the game are shown here.
Hmmm... To Laura Bow or King's Quest 7 next?

03-01-2009 05:25 AM I've been playing Titan Quest: Immortal Throne and I have to say it's a load of fun, especially playing online with Darkportal. Basically it's your no-brainer Diablo clone set in ancient Greek mythology. But it's a load of fun, the graphics are extremely pretty and it's sure to quench anybody's Diablo 3 thirst before it comes out. Highly recommend getting it.
I'm now replaying City of Heroes and City of Villains and though it is probably one of the worst grinding MMOs out there, it's still a load of fun. The game captures the comic book feel like no other game out there. Plus the community is by far the best I've ever encountered. Everyone is helpful beyond all belief and if you need a group a simple word would get you several invites instantly. City of Heroes is the game to get if you're looking for a fun, casual and simple MMO that doesn't force you to jump through flaming hoops to get something critical to the gameplay experience. It also doubles as an awesome chatroom-client. F*ck Playstation Home. Get on City of Heroes, make an awesome superhero and chat away with the friendliest bunch on the Internet. And for those depraved bunch, there are more women in City of Heroes than any other online game (well I don't know about World of Warcraft with it having 11 million subscribers...).
And lastly I just got Operation: Anchorage for Fallout 3 and a f*ckload of mods. The mods truly remind you as to why you bought the PC version of the game. It's an entirely different game. If Fallout 3 was f*cking awesome, install a few mods and it's like Bethesda coughed up a 24K golden egg forged by Jesus Christ Himself. Give the mods a few more months to mature and you can kiss Bethesda's sorry-ass DLC goodbye. Re: Quick thoughts on the games you're playing now.Options

I was playing some Fallout 3 last night, and considering that my goal on this run-through is to kill every single person I meet, there's a little something that pissed me of: some characters are not only invincible, they're invincible and will attack you relentlessly. Now, Bethesda, how is that fair? Luckily, I found a way to make them stop chasing me: I knocked them out (this doesn't last very long), and then slept. When I woke up, they were friendly again.
