You shouldn't have given them the "DICE and EA are 1337 and we trust them to fix things" boost to 80%. IMHO, you should have ripped them apart - from what I've heard, saw in the screens and what you described it's a low 70s game.

And give us your take on Unreal 2004, biznatch. :smileymad:

Re: Battlefield Vietnam Review discussion

I dunno, I like it far more then BF1942 because 1)The infantry weapons are ALOT more lethal 2)The cover granted by foilage insures if you run around like it's UT, you are going to get gunned down by people who are more cautious. Even the dinky NVA rifles can kill quickly at long range simply by firing a hail of bullets in the general vicinity of your target.

As for the really bad lag, apparently this is caused by running a retail BFV on a hacked server(that allows hacked clients). Try playing on one of the official EA servers and see if it's as bad. I haven't had any lag problems as bad as you've described.

It's simply different from DC, I wouldn't say it's any better or worse depending on what kind of game you're in the mood for. If you can look past some of the clearly questionable kits, the game really comes down to who sees who 1st and fires 1st.

Heh, and in addition to heat seeking missiles, you forgot to add that C4 sticks to vehicles now. :smileyhappy:

Re: Battlefield Vietnam Review discussion

I've been playing the game for a few days and in my opinion it rocks.  The addition of all the ground cover dramaticly changes tatics compared with BF:1942.  It's very easy to hind in some brush and pick off noobs running out in the open.  It does have some balancing issues as stated at the end of the review, but even as a US assualt with a M-60 and a boom stick I've still had my ass handed to me by the VC quite a few times.  As far as the lag goes, I think I've gotten that MOSTLY straightened out.  The majority of it seems to have been from the sound upgrades.  For me atleast.  I have an Audigy 1 Platinum and for some reason, if I select EAX 1 in the sound options the game D-R-A-G-S!  Switch it over to EAX 3 and it runs fine... very odd.  The sorting by ping bug is pretty lame.  :smileymad:  How the heck did that one get past QA?  DIE CHARLIE!!!

Overall, I highly recommend it.  Just beware that there are a few issues you will have to overcome until a patch or 2 come out.

Personally, I like the game. I feel that with DC, its required that you know how to drive a helicopter or a plane, caue otherwise, most maps dont have real good cover, making it kind of difficult for a regular soldier or even a tank to get across the desert.
I feel the whole new terrain improves this game alot.

Re: Battlefield Vietnam Review discussion

First off, I'm a veteran BF:1942 player. I've been playing since the Good ol' wake island demo way back when. I've played it heavily ever since. I've participated and done very well in TWL and OGL ladders for the game (thanks to a great bunch of guys). I've played almost all of the Mods that ended up coming with it. Apart from the neatoness of the mods it lacked the balance and "tightness" or control of the weapons use and design in the maps etc...it just was not put together right. The mods never felt like "Battlefield". They felt like messing with a bunch of toys. So they never really stuck on me and I was happy with the Standard Battlefield as it was.

That being said, I picked up Vietnam. A day or so shy of it's availability and watched the community embrace the product and give their opinion. I saw opinions all over the place(understandable, happens with most games). So I get it and I'm completely hooked. The game is Battlefield in a different era with gameplay improvements to boot. The game is smart and allows you to be tactically creative and at the same time allows for a hero to be made. The 3D map, the new conquer spawn points method. The balance of Air, Armor, and infantry is amazingly close to were it needs to be. This may not seem like much but when you throw all of these things in extremely smart maps with encredible design schemes and you add these factors up and make it work. It leaves for a gaming experience like no other.  This game is incredably deep. So deep from top to bottom it is actually fun to play on public servers again. I was so ready to dislike this game but it has sucked me in.

There were some disappointments here with the sketchy Server selection screen and ingame GUI(1942 got the upgrade...hello?). Falling down stairs and dying. I was "assuming" you wouldn't see these again. Hopefully snuffed out soon. There are a few others but they, by no means, break the game.

They took a great game and made it better. I couldnt have asked for anything more, really. There is no game even close to BF:V. This game is so smart it's scary.

Sorry about the grammar and sentence structure. It's late!

Re: Battlefield Vietnam Review discussion

I love the original BF:1942 and Desert Combat. However, I refuse to buy this game on the principal of the lazy buggy conditions EA and Dice choose to release these series of games under. I smelled trouble when they didn't release any kind of demo like they have for BF:1942 and every following expansion. Why would I want to pay $35 for an upgraded Mod? I got the UT2k4 special edition DVD with free headset for $30! That's 10 modes of gameplay, over a hundred maps, vehicle like interaction a la Battlefield. All that for $30! And most importantly, the game runs lag free, bug free, smooth as silk and it's beautifull. I have no doubt I'll pick up BF:V. But out of principle, I'm waiting until it's $20 and finished, er, I mean patched. At least give us a demo already!

Same-old
Battlefield Vietnam isn't such a big change from Battlefield 1942. In fact, Desert Combat has done most of what Vietnam does now, and it's free.

Errrr how is any of DC related to BF:V? Don't you mean the EOD mod as its the EOD that does the Vietnam conflict......

Re: Battlefield Vietnam Review discussion

drizden, try forgotten hope, they take bf42 and make it complete, try wake map, its fantastic...best realism mod for bf42 ever..only problem i see with it is the people like us(wake demo) adapt fast, but the "spray and pray" players dont like it... too many real kills i guess.

The biggest problems i have with BFV is the MAJOR game inbalances, and the maps.

Ive had no lag issues, i have a p4 2.4 with 1012 ddr ram, and a ATI9000 128megs vid card.
I love all the new classes, i just feel the power levels are way off. They helos and jets are great.

obviously the allied huggers make a good fight a problem when its 14usvs4VC, but auto teams is an option..and the M60/LAW is a problem

here we have one gun running full speed with 300lbs of weapons and everyone uses it, heavy infanty and anti armor on one guy?not to mention the M60 is a 2 man operation in real life...But i agree with the review, its gameplay over realism(hopefully the MODS will fix that if ea doesnt). Also ive hit helos with my sa-7 like 4 x and it stayed up..on a few occations(dont get that one), specially when the cobra heat seeker is a 1 fire=one kill, aiming not needed.

also when 3-4 mods for bf42 come out with 12-20 maps that are great, i expected more from dice and EA. Some of the maps are the same, there is no small maps, and really, i think these maps have too many limitations.

I didnt have the problems everyone else seems to of have with bf42 at the start i always liked it, or i dont remember what the problems were, so i must not have been that choked. but BF:V does have issues that make it very hard to find a good fight..

cant wait for mods and updates.

Going to be kicking some AZZ in sp till then!:smileyvery-happy:

Re: Battlefield Vietnam Review discussion

I've been waiting for a good Vietnam shooter for years. Vietcong didn't quite do it for me but I knew BF42 from a friends so I was expecting a lot from BFV. I heard a lot of complaints but for some reason I just felt I had to buy this game, and I'm not dissapointed.

The first thing I realised is I need to get 128MB videocard... :smileysad: But at 1024x768x16 with all details set to low it runs quite smooth on my Athlon XP 2400+ / 512MB DDR / GeForce 3.

The single player sucks of course. When showing a friend (just mentioning I bought the game spawned masses at my door to come have a look) I fired up SP first, then I went online. Immidiatly my friend could see the single player was pretty sad at most, compared to the fun factor of playing with real people. The lag is an issue, because basically BFV runs superior sound to BF42 on the same engine. I have found a sollution to this one tho: Go to "EA GAMES\Battlefield Vietnam\Mods\BfVietnam\settings" and look for a file named "default.con". Open this with whatever word processor you want and under the code line "Game.DebugCallbackDisabled 0" add this line: "Game.soundbuffersize 400". I haven't noticed anything myself but yeah, its worth the try eh?

Downsides are the bugs mentioned by others, but this will be patched. What gets on my nerves is the constant "chopper-race", ie players running like mad to get theirselves a chopper and end up crashing it 5 seconds later. Also the cool boobytraps and other new features for engineers are hardly used which is a shame.

I don't own BF42 so I don't know if existing players should get this, but if you like large scale online battles and Vietnam movies (and you've got the hardware to run BF) then I don't see any reason not to get it.

See my readers review for my opinion on gameplay.
