New Forum Look

We have an open thread on this but I'm going to place this in the forum designed for it. The new look is not a good one in my opinion. While I know that people can get used to something and become set in their ways, this look is as close to bad as I've seen. The colors are washed out There's almost no way to distinquish between upper and lower threads I can find no way to move things around to suit my own tastes I've lost the ability to mark threads as I want them marked This is the short list. If it's just a test, I vote we don't use this one. Cec

Formatting is gone too. My post above was not written as one lone paragraph but showed up as one.

Re: New Forum Look

New items: I have to confirm a simple "Mark all as read" ... I don't like the extra step. And if I read a thread, then come back later, it's in the same place in the lineup instead of new items moving to the top of the line.

What the F*CK is this shit!? It's about the worst thing you could possibly do. I mean, I could put as much effort into making the forums look terrible as I can and I wouldn't even come close. Change it back, ASAP.

Re: New Forum Look

As I said in the other thread, there need to be more borders.  Right now everything just runs into everything else.  Put a border underneath the thread title and timestamp of each post (or slightly change the color of that area) and put a border between the post and the avatar area on the left.  Then add much bolder borders between each thread when looking at each forum section.

I already sent a message to Pongky on this, I wouldn't argue that the old forum look could have bee spruced up but this is like 5 steps backwards IMO.

I can't get my sigs to work.  I figured mine had disappeared due to its size, so I reduced it.  No go.  I can't even used an image the size of my avatar.  Nothing's showing up at all for me.

Re: New Forum Look

I think, at the very minimum, (a) all the blue fonts should be changed back to black and (b) the font size should be jacked up.  This site is literally an eyesore.

I would also like for mod priveliges to be reinstated, such as the ability to change your login ID.  This is an absolute trainwreck.

Re: New Forum Look

Interesting "glitch" (in my mind), since I read these forums at home and at work, I've always been able to mark them 'read' at one place and then when I got to the other, my changes stayed. Now, if I mark them read at home and come into work I have to do it all over again.

Carriage returns don't work in here as has been mentioned unless I hand code the break into it.

And there's not enough difference between the threads read and those unread to make it easy to see which are new... more as I play in here.

Pretty sure Pongky doesn't work for FS anymore.

Anyway, I too, cannot stand this new look. The forums see to load and respond slower too.

Re: New Forum Look

Ya know, I never really realized it at the time, but I remember Pongky creating a Web Developer in the Hardware Forum, and with his lack of posting, I can only guess that he hired a replacement for the site. Kinda wonder if anyone picked up that job, cuz now that I sorta have time I wouldn't mind fixing a few things on the site (ahem.. the friggin' Quick Look menu...). Granted, I tend to hand-code things vs. use something like Dreamweaver, but it could work.

Wow, this is my first time logging in since the changes; the forums are slow, washed out, and bunched up.  Man, change it back!

My avatar is so small :smileysad:

EDIT:  Well I do like the 'last edited' info changes (on the top of the message instead of appending the post.

Re: New Forum Look

I wish a site owner would drop in and talk to us about it. I can't test a link from the message posting unless I right-click on it and choose new tab. I still hate having to confirm marking all messages as read and the lack of distinct highlighting between the upper section where threads are stickied and the newer ones below makes for a tougher time seeing the difference in them.

While I'm behind you all the way, the option to have links open in new pages exists.  You have to select the option though, which is pretty sad.  The default is set to have links open within the existing window.  Anyway, the oprtions are in a pull down menu at the bottom of the box that appears when you add a link.

I call for dark blue with white text for the stickied threads.

I'd like to have back the ability to mark all of the forums as Read and do it without a confirmation page. Anyone from the powers that be listening?

Re: New Forum Look

Whenever I quote something and then post, the forums software feels a need to add in extra blank space.  This is really pissing me off.     :smileysad:

Is there anyone I can write and ask that a simple "Mark ALL posts read" be added to the main forum page? Every other forum I'm on allows me to reset the counter on all threads at once.

Re: New Forum Look

The extra spaces that the forum automatically throws into quoted posts is really, really pissing me off.  I don't like wasting space, so I have to spend an extra 10 seconds every time I write a post with a quote in it editing the HTML so that the extra spaces don't appear.     :smileysad:

Confirm for mark read will be removed in future versions. Thanks for the report.

Each community is different, but there should be a quicklinks module on the main forum page, where you can mark all messages as read/new.

Re: New Forum Look

Nice to see posting again, Pammy.  Another concern of ours is the lack of a significant contrast between stickied threads and our regular posts.  Can we get a darker blue to represent the sticked?  The colors just kinda run together as it stands.  Thanks!

One last thing.  Prior to the update, moderators had the option to edit their log in names.  Can that feature be reinstated?

Pammy, don't forget the larger avatars!  A link I posted early in this thread shows that this is an easy fix.

That's what I've always seen, but not here. Maybe a switch isn't set?

Also, could you maybe make links a litle bit darker, as currently some of them are hard to see sometimes.  Might just be my monitor though, but there are a few links that are hard to see sometimes.

Agreed.  Black and navy text are not very easy to distinguish between.  Especially since the link is no longer underlined.

Re: New Forum Look

I guess my main concern is the langth of time it takes to load up the main forum page.  Just timed it a few minutes ago.  Took 24 seconds for the page to load up.  No, I'm not on dial-up.  :smileywink:

Same here, but there are still about a billion things about this new format that bother.  Mostly the added space when quoting, though.

Re: New Forum Look

Ok, something funny's gone on in the last day or so - at the front page of the forum my list of recent private messages has become completely squashed so that the text shown is now one long column of text about two words wide and extending down the page. Also, the date appears to run over the "Quick Look" links on the right. Does anyone else have this? This is how it appears both on my work monitor - 21" - and my 17" one at home, so I don't think it's simply a resolution issue.
