FS Main Site Offline, Here's Why

You probably noticed that FiringSquad.com had been giving a 503 - Server Unavailable error since this morning... A little while ago, we got the address to redirect to the forums, which are still operational  (obviously, since you're reading this!). I've already had people contact me and ask if this is the end for FS, so we thought it best to let everyone know that this is only temporary.

Turns out the site was attacked/hacked/intruded on, however you want to put it, causing network overload and the server being taken offline by the web host. We won't be able to bring it back until we get someone to fix it. I'm not sure of the exact details, so I can't say if that means we need to beef up security or clean up some malicious code or restore functionality, etc. Needless to say, we're working on it, and the site will be back as soon as possible.

It's business as usual for you regulars that never venture over to the main page anyway :smileywink: , and to those of you that might never have visited the forums before: welcome! We hope you stay a while.

The redirect is sure to get a few new members. DON'T BE SHY. We're awesome. More awesome than the front page community. SO POST! :smileyhappy:

I was hoping there was some super-awesome site redesign to usher in the FiringSquad renaissance but you're saying someone tried to hack us? Why the hell would someone go through the trouble? Could it have anything to do with the repost trolls on the Hardware forum?

Beats me... And though the thought had crossed my mind (about repost spammers taking it to the next level), there's really no way to tell.

Thanks for the update. i was wondering what the hell was going on. Also, don't delete your cookies as you won't be able to log in if you do. The Sign in links just bounce you back to the forum main page. Luckily, I haven't done that on my work PC in a while so all is a go for killing time on the job. :smileyhappy: Here's hoping all this gets resolved quickly. I miss the front page already.

Registering for the frontpage also counts for the forums, they just can't login. The frontpage needs to come back soon or that's going to be the end of us.

Guys, I hate to say it but you don't have to stretch your imagination too much to envision a worse case scenario here.  I don't mean to be all doom and gloom, I just think we should have a plan for the eventuality.  FS has been sick in the past and always recovered but the site has only gotten older with time and has never been healthy to begin with.  We should probably start discussion on what do we as a community do if the site doesn't bounce back while we still can.

We should come up with a place to meet, and post it in each of the sections, just in case the others are never able to log in again.  Once we've got everyone together (assuming the forums don't come back up), we should take a vote on a new Message Board for FS members to emmigrate to.

Any thoughts on a good place to meet up??

I have the majority of forum regulars on my Steam friends list already but if anyone out there has not joined the FiringSquad Steam Group or sent a friend request to 'bysmitty', I'd highly advise you to do so soon.  We'll use the the announcements section of the Steam group for any updates.

I agree with Sync that we should spend some of our Frag Night time tonight creating a rough plan of action if we lose the site or forums.  I hope that we don't have to use it here or in the immediate future but it can't hurt to be prepared.  For anyone that wants to partake in the discussions tonight, join us on the FS Mumble server ~10pm EST.

On PC we use Mumble:

Server Name: FiringSquad Mumble Server (although to be honest the server name really doesn't matter its just a local setting)

Address: fsmumble.dyndns.org

Port: 64738

So... the site has been stuck in limbo for two months now. Is this another problem or have the creators abandoned FS?

At this point the powers that be behind FS have effectively abandoned it. The community has an ongoing initiative to create a new site, more news should be coming about this very soon so make sure to check back in the next couple weeks!

If you make it idiot proof, they will just make a better idiot.

That's good to hear. FS has been the first place I go for gaming info since the site's inception.

On a related note, I was asked to start posting news again, so you can keep coming back... For now, at least.

Re: FS Main Site Offline, Here's Why

From what I was told, it was some kind of disagreement/miscommunication with the web host. Nothing external or malicious like last time.
